School Board Priorities 2009-2010

Each year, the Ankeny Board of Directors discusses, defines and publishes their Priorities for the year. These Priorities help the administration, faculty and staff members remain focused on common goals.  The following are the board-approved Priorities for the 2009-20010 school year.

Defining and Ensuring High Expectations

CURRICULUM & INSTRUCTION
  • Develop and present academic best practices to the board, including homework policy, semester exams, professional development, International Baccalaureate, acceleration, special programs, grading practices, assessments, and other academic issues as deemed appropriate by the Curriculum & Instruction Department.
CURRICULUM REVIEW
  • Review curriculum in areas of language arts, business education, family & consumer science and industrial technology, and present a comprehensive curriculum in these areas to be approved by the board of education. The process will also include a list of teaching materials to be board approved.
DEPARTMENTAL STRATEGIC PLANS
  • Develop plans within each district department to address short-term and long-term issues. Departments will present and request board approval.
Developing Quality Community Engagement

DISTRICT STRATEGIC PLANNING
  • Present district strategic planning options to the Board for consideration.
TRANSITION TEAM
  • Form a transition team to determine best practice in transitioning a single secondary school system to a multiple secondary school system and submit the transition plan to the board of education. (Aspects to address in the transition plan include, but are not limited to, academic programming, staffing, funding availability, mascots and colors, athletics and activities, vision and mission statements, and technology.)
Mapping Strategically for the Future in a Growth Environment

INTRAMURAL PROGRAMMING
  • Form a committee to review current opportunities in intramural programming and recommend to the board a plan to enhance student intramural opportunities.
MIDDLE SCHOOL ATHLETICS-ACTIVITIES
  • Develop an implementation plan for additional 8th & 9th grade opportunities in athletics and activities, and submit to the Board for approval.
CONSTRUCTION / FACILITY DEVELOPMENT
  • Develop and submit a plan to address upgrades to East Elementary School.
  • Finalize a plan for needed infrastructure and utilities at the 36th Street and 18th Street district-owned locations, determine financial funding and present recommendations to the Board of Education.
  • Develop a concept for one athletic (football, soccer, track) stadium to serve two high schools. Direct the Superintendent to recommend location, timeline and financial funding to the Board of Education.
  • Recommend to the Board of Education a plan to address a swimming/diving pool, tennis courts and baseball/softball fields to serve two high school programs.
  • Using the architectural recommendation for renovation needs to transition the current high school to an 8-9 middle school, recommend the scope of renovations, financial funding, and timeline to the Board of Education.
Board Leadership

DEVELOP / ADDRESS DISTRICT-WIDE SAFETY & CRISIS PLANS
  • Report to the board the current district-wide safety and crisis plans. Develop policies and procedures to address areas of improvement and ensure best practice for the district and all schools.
PRESCHOOL
  • Research and report to the Board research and best practice of effective universal preschool programs.
BOARD TRAINING / BOARD DEVELOPMENT
  • Continue board professional development and training through local, state, regional and national meetings hosted by the Iowa Association of School Boards and National School Boards Association.
SUPERINTENDENT EVALUATION
  • Evaluate the Superintendent of Schools and provide feedback in accordance with Iowa Code.
