Meet Your School Board 


Here to serve you - Members of the Ankeny Board of Education are elected at large for three-year terms, during which they receive no pay for their services.  The Ankeny Board of Education follows a governance model.  In this process, the board gives direction to the school district as to their priorities and goals, and the administration then develops the best procedures and practices to fulfill those goals. A brief profile and contact information for each board member is presented below. The members of your current Ankeny School Board are:

 
Andrew Martin                       
Board President

Andrew is married and has four children attending Ankeny Schools. Andrew was born in Rome, Italy, raised near Houston, Texas, and has lived in Ankeny since 1997. He holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from Texas A&M University and a Master of Business Administration from The University of Iowa. As Vice President, Global Marketing at Kemin Industries, Andrew manages all commercial development in Asia, Europe and North America. Prior to Kemin Industries, he served as a Vice President at Tone Brothers. He has prior board experience from Mason Companies, AC Nielsen and the Chippewa Valley United Way, and served as the 2007 strategic planning facilitator for the Ankeny Youth Council.

Leslie Petersen
Board Vice-President

Leslie and her husband, Jon, have two children both of whom attend Northeast Elementary. Leslie is a lifelong resident of Ankeny and a 1988 graduate. Her husband Jon is a 1986 graduate. Leslie is a Financial Controller for the Principal Financial Group. She completed both her undergraduate and graduate studies at DrakeUniversity, majoring in Accounting, and holds a CPA license. Leslie is a former board member of the Young Women’s ResourceCenter where she also served as Treasurer and was a past President. Leslie is a member of the AICPA and ISCPA.

Pat Cahill
Board Member

Pat and her husband, Jim, moved to Ankeny in 1974, in part, due to the reputation of the Ankeny school system.  All four of their children and two grandchildren graduated from Ankeny Schools. Five additional grandchildren are currently enrolled.  Pat retired after 15 years at DMACC, serving in the department that provides college credit courses for high school students.  Pat previously served on the Ankeny Board of Education for 12 years from 1993 to 2005.  She decided to run again in 2008 because she felt strongly about being a part of the planning process to address the growth in the Ankeny school system.

Aaron Johnson
Board Member

Aaron and his wife, Rebecca, have four children; three attend Terrace Elementary and one attends Northview Middle School. They have lived in Ankeny since 2000 when they moved to Iowa from Chicagoland. Aaron received his Bachelor's in Communications from the Moody Bible Institute and has spent most of his career in marketing and communications with stints in radio, video production and web development. Today, Aaron is the Marketing Manager for Accumold, a high-tech manufacturing company located in Ankeny. Prior to his service to the Board of Education, Aaron has served on various committees and boards including the Ankeny Planning & Zoning Commission and the Ankeny Parks Board. He is serving on his first term with the School Board.

Trent Murphy
Board Member


Trent and his wife, Renee, have two daughters, Aimee and Heather, attending Northview. Trent is a former high school science teacher, wrestling coach and Science Department Chair for West Des Moines Valley High School and Gilbert High School in Arizona.  A native of Bondurant, Trent relocated back to Iowa from Arizona in 2000.  He is the president of CJM Financial, Inc., a local Ankeny business.  Trent earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Simpson College and a Masters’ Degree in Education from Drake University.  He is a member of the Ankeny Rotary International Club and has been nominated to the board of control for the Ankeny Chamber of Commerce.  Trent currently serves as a representative to the Legal Service Fund for the Iowa Association of School Boards (IASB) and is serving his third term on the Ankeny School Board.

Todd Shafer           
Board Member
Todd is married and has two children in Ankeny Schools.  Todd is originally from Marion Iowa and has lived in Ankeny since 2003. He holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from Upper Iowa University and a Master of Business Administration from MidAmerica Nazarene University. Also, he holds a lifetime C.P.M. (Certified Procurement Manager) certification. As Vice-President of Vendor Management with Wells Fargo, Todd manages enterprise-wide vendors for the company, as well as contracts and strategic sourcing. Prior to Wells Fargo, he served in various director positions in supply chain management and engineering construction. He has prior board experience serving as board president and past president for the local Institute for Supply Management Central Iowa affiliate.

George Tracy
Board Member

George and his wife, Pat, have been Ankeny residents for 41 of the 47 years they’ve been married. Their two children, Kevin & Renee, graduated from Ankeny, as well as their granddaughter, Sheena. Their grandson, Dominic, is a sixth grader at Parkview.  George is an Account Manager for Blue Bunny Ice Cream and Dairy Products. George’s grocery career began with Campbell Soup Company in 1967 and for the last 15 years was President of The Sales Force Companies. He also served on The Sales Force Companies Corporate Board. George served on numerous broker advisory boards and was President of the Iowa Grocers Association twice.  In addition George was elected to the Athletic Officials Hall Of Fame in both Basketball and Softball.
