Students Participate in STEM Workshop Sponsored by Community Education; hosted by Boy Scouts
Thirty-six second through fifth grade students explored science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) during an inaugural workshop sponsored by Ankeny Community Education and hosted by the Mid Iowa Council, Boys Scouts of America (BSA) on March 7. Read more about the event here
Iowa Department of Education Hosts Iowa Financial Literacy Summit
Teachers, students and parents are invited to attend the Iowa Financial Literacy Summit on May 5 from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
at the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines. The Iowa Department of Education is hosting this event as part of a broader effort to improve Iowa students' financial literacy skills. Tickets are available through April 21

Prairie Ridge Middle School Student Places in Iowa Essay Contest
Prairie Ridge Middle School seventh grader Ellie Wilson received third place, and was one of eight students across Iowa to place in the 31st Annual Write Women Back into History Essay Contest. Wilson was recognized at the State Historical Building in Des Moines on March 12. Read more about Wilson's honor here
Eleven Individual Speech Students Named to All-State; 28 Receive Division I Rating
Congratulations to 11 students from Ankeny High School, Ankeny Centennial High School, and Northview Middle School who won honors at the Individual State Speech competition at Nevada High School on Mach 14, earning them a spot in the All-State Speech Festival on March 30 at the University of Northern Iowa. In addition, 28 AHS, ACHS, Northview and Southview students received a Division I rating. Read more about the competition here
Interpreting your student's Iowa Assessments scores:
In January, Ankeny students took the Iowa Assessments test, which replaced the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) and Iowa Tests of Education Development (ITED). Test results are now being sent home to parents. Ankeny Schools provide several resources to help you interpret your student’s test scores. It is recommended that you review this online information.
Fifth Grade Choral Festival Practice MP3s Available
MP3 files of the 5th grade choral festival music are now available to download and use for practice on your own. If you're participating in the 5th Grade Choral Festival, just download the MP3s of your part and start practicing!

ACHS Dance Team Competes at Nationals; Advances to Finals
The Ankeny Centennial High School Dance Team advanced to the finals for all of their routines at the National Dance Alliance (NDA) National Championship in Orlando, Florida, March 6-8. View pictures of the performances and read the results here

Project Fresh Start prom dress giveaway is huge success!
Project Fresh Start's Annual Prom Dress Giveaway, sponsored by the Ankeny Schools Community Education Department, served 159 students this year from more than 10 area high schools. Due to the generous support of the community, more than 1,000 dresses were available, nearly double than received last year. Read more about the program here
Ankeny Students Take Home Awards at Speech Competition
The senior speech teams from Ankeny High School and Ankeny Centennial High School competed in the 45th annual Walnut Hill Speech Contest on March 7 in Anita, Iowa. Students from Ankeny took home eight first-place, six second-place and two third-place awards. View more about the awards here

District Safety Committee seeking members -
Ankeny Community School District’s Safety Committee is forming now. The committee will give input to help guide work in such areas as work place safety (accident prevention), strategies to connect community and school district, structure and technology components, and setting standards as they pertain to safety and security.
This committee will first meet on April 13 at 4:00 p.m. in the Board Room at 306 SW School St. The committee will plan to meet four times per year, unless otherwise determined. Meetings will be scheduled for a two-hour period with the start time being determined at the April 13 meeting.

Additional babysitting clinic now offered; register today:
Due to high interest in the Ankeny Community Education’s Babysitting Clinic, another clinic will be offered May 2 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Iowa State Extension educators will expand your child’s skills and confidence to provide safe and responsible care when asked to babysit. Designed for students in the fifth grade and above, this clinic teaches basic first aid, how to handle emergency situations, caring for infants and young children, meal prep, playtime, what parents expect, and much more. The $30 cost of the program includes lunch and some essential babysitting items.
