ACE Mentor Team with AHS Students Wins National Competition Congratulations to the ACE Mentor Program of Central Iowa, whose team included AHS students Nicole Bramow and Sirina Reed. The team recently won the Construction Industry Round Table (CIRT)/ACE Mentor Program National Design Competition in Washington, DC. Their design for a modular school addition and was ultimately named the winner from 43 entries nationwide. Read more about the ACE team from Central Iowa here.
AHS Students Place 2nd, 3rd in Chinese Language Competition On May 4, students in Chinese classes from AHS and Northview Middle School participated in the first High School Chinese Language Speaking Competition at the University of Iowa. Ankeny High School students gave a strong performance, winning second and third place in the competition. Read about the Chinese language competition here.
Ankeny Centennial High School Song Lyrics Selected After a long process that included a contest for lyrics and review of eight different submissions by student peers, Ankeny Centennial High School has a school song! Members of the Jaguar Advisory Team, made up of 8th through 11th graders who will attend ACHS next fall, selected a version made up of lyrics from four different submissions.

School Board Plans Renewal of Instructional Support Levy The Ankeny Board of Education is planning continued participation in the Iowa Instructional Support Levy (ISL), which is scheduled for renewal and provides a number of direct educational supports to students in Ankeny Schools. Originally approved by voters in 1990, the ISL supports student education by purchasing instructional materials, classroom supplies, fine arts equipment, instructional equipment, and by providing staffing, teacher training and programs that support the curriculum. The levy was last renewed five years ago and requires a vote of the Board for renewal. Read more about the ISL here.
AHS French Students Take Top Iowa Honors on Exam Congratulations to AHS students who had some of the highest scores in Iowa on the National French Exam, including the 1st and 2nd place scores on the French V exam. Teachers Joan Pace and Pam Lund encouraged numerous students to participate in this annual event, and out of more than 700 Iowa students who took the test, several AHS students placed in the top 10. This optional exam allows students to be recognized for their outstanding French skills at the state & national levels. Read about the winners and the French exam here.
National Honor Society Inducts 80 Students Ankeny High School recently inducted 80 students in to National Honor Society (NHS) at a ceremony at which Iowa Governor Terry Branstad was the keynote speaker. Students apply for membership and are evaluated on extracurricular involvement, community service, scholarship, and an essay. Read about NHS and see a list of inductees here.
Seventh-Graders Learn About Ankeny's Rich History During several days between April 22- May 1, all Parkview and Prairie Ridge seventh grade students took tours of the Ankeny Area Historical Museum to learn about the history of Ankeny. Over the past several years, an ongoing relationship has been built between the museum staff, volunteers and seventh grade American History teachers.

French Students Tour Ankeny in Second Leg of Exhange In March, 14 AHS students traveled to France with Modern Language teacher Mrs. Pam Lund for the French exchange program. In April, those same students from the Lycée Européen in Villers-Cotterets, France traveled here to complete the exchange. The tables were turned as the 14 students from Ankeny High School hosted the same students that they themselves had stayed with in France.

AHS Senior Selected for National Information Tech Award AHS senior Rhiannon Barth has been named a recipient of the Award for Aspirations in Computing by the National Center for Women and Information Technology (NCWIT). Rhiannon was one of only nine Iowa students to be selected for t he award, which honors young women for computing-related achievements and interests.

School Communications Win Awards in State Contest Ankeny Schools' communications won twelve awards in the 2013 Iowa Schools Public Relations Association (ISPRA) communications contest. Projects are evaluated on a 100-point scale by judges from public relations associations in other states. Submissions are evaluated and feedback is given on content, writing, design, photos, overall impression and other criteria that contribute to the effectiveness of the communcations.

Governor Branstad Visits Ashland Ridge Second Grade Ashland Ridge second-graders had a particularly distinguished visitor April 22 as part of their social studies unit on American government. Iowa Governor Terry Branstad took time out of his busy schedule to stop by the school and talk to the students about the job of the governor.

Students Study Water Quality with Conservation Agencies Using nets and sifting pans, AHS students spent an afternoon working with representatives from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Iowa Soybean Association, Monsanto and other companies testing water and searching for aquatic life in the central Iowa waterway at Mally’s Park. U.S. News Ranks Ankeny High School Among Nation's Best Ankeny High School is among the best high schools in Iowa and the country, according to U.S. News and World Report’s 2013 analysis of high schools across America. Ankeny was ranked the tenth best high school in Iowa and number 1,746 in the nation, receiving a silver medal and placing higher than nearly 20,000 other schools across the nation.

New Security Procedures Coming in 2013-2014 Safety and security of students and staff is a top priority of Ankeny Community Schools. Accordingly, the district has again conducted a security assessment of its schools, reviewed procedures, and considered recent recommendations by school security experts. As the result, several new security procedures will be implemented beginning with the 2013-2014 school year. Read the parent letter regarding new security measures here.
